On January 22nd, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) unveiled measures to regulate the growth of international study permits in 2024, implementing changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility criteria.
Starting September 2024, graduates from study programs under curriculum licensing agreements between private and public colleges won’t be eligible for a PGWP. This decision aims to address loopholes and ensure tighter oversight, preventing situations where colleges revoke admission offers due to capacity constraints. Furthermore, IRCC announced that graduates of master’s and other short graduate-level programs will now qualify for a 3-year work permit, addressing the limitation imposed by the current criteria based on program length.
The PGWP, an open work permit allowing international graduates to work in Canada without a job offer, plays a crucial role in facilitating their transition to permanent residency. The recent changes aim to create a more controlled and sustainable environment for international students in Canada.
